Martina’s Birthday Story – TL;DR 0

Martina's Birthday Story

TL;DR! Remember these segments? Where we answer someone’s question and we talk for a long time about stuff! We didn’t do these for a while. We were doing the K Crunch Cocktail instead. Well, now we’re back to doing TL;DRs and we’ve stopped with the Cocktails. Sorry Cocktail fans! We miss this segment a lot, and we already have two other playlists throughout the week.

Also, we’re dropping Google Moderator. It kinda sucks at letting us do what we need it to do: moderate comments. It lets people vote comments up and down, but no…moderation, which – to me – also means the ability to delete comments. So, no more Moderator. Comments now are the name of the game. Leave a comment either here or in our YouTube video’s page and we’ll pick some questions from there. Not everything has to be serious or a long question. Fun questions are permitted as well.

So today’s question comes from Spudgy, who was a mega sissy baby when we were out for the day. He kept on calling us, leaving voicemails like “HEY MOM COME HOME MOM PLZ MOM FRUM SPUDGY” Not even sure how Spudgy learned how to use a phone. That’s one clever dog. So, we explain what happened for Martina’s birthday. TL;DR – I took her to the W Hotel as a surprise. She had no clue. We got couple massages where a couple of odd things happened, had a great dinner, then were about to have cocktails when Martina’s birthday hat got spotted by a party of people celebrating someone else’s birthday. Their generosity resulted in lots of champagne and shots for Martina, which in turn related to her being grossly hung-over when we were supposed to go WANKing.

Anyhow, we got some footage of the birthday singing by them. Supposedly celebrities were there but we’re too out of touch with the Thailand & Singaporian fashion/celebrity scene to know who’s who. Maybe some of you will know who these people are? Hopefully! We were able to speak with Chan from 8eight, who was there, though. His English was awesome! He was very modest, though, but very nice. Frank Cintamani was really nice as well, and too important in the fashion world for us to possibly fathom. Long story short: we were definitely the biggest dorks there!

Anyhow, here’s the video of the fun times and Happy Birthday singing. Yay!

U-Kiss – Doradora: Kpop Music Mondays 0

U-Kiss Doradora

U-Kiss is finally back with their latest Music Video, Doradora, which got almost 20 freaking thousand votes on our site. You Kissmes are INTENSE. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out here:

So, we didn’t give a glowing review of this song like we did with Tick Tack. Tick Tack was, and still is, our favourite U-Kiss song ever. Doradora is a good song, but I think we’re viewing it through the perspective of people who totally loved Tick Tack. Kind of like the third book in the Hunger Games. It’s a good book, and probably would be enjoyed a lot more if the first book of the Hunger Games wasn’t so freaking awesome. It’s kind of hard living up to that. Like, how’s JK Rowling gonna be able to write anything after Harry Potter?

One thing we do really appreciate about UKISS is that they are willingly to change up their sound and try out new song patterns. If you look at when they started to where they are now, you can’t say, OH that sounds like a UKISS song, and I think that can be risky, but it’s great that they are willing to do that. They could stick with a winning formula, but they’re trying out new things, and we dig that.

Not really digging the video that much, though. It was almost Sistar level boring. Maybe not for you who are drooling over the eye candy, and having your ovaries and brovaries exploding, but in terms of the two of us being able to discuss interesting things in this video, we had really little to work with. The couch was ugly, and a lot of the video was closeups of their face as they sat in front of their ugly couch. The spinning room was interesting, but we found that stool at the bottom of the bed a bit too glaringly obvious. It’s against the wall, we get it, only because of that big hump at the bottom of the bed. Argh! Too distracting. There were much better ways to suspend U-Kiss against the wall. How about a brace of sorts around their waists. Or, if all else fails, mega-wedgies. That’d work, too, and would make for a much funnier video :D

Anyhow, about the U-Kiss CD Giveaway Contest: now, we didn’t mention this in the video, because it’s still up in the air, but here’s the deal: U-Kiss is going to Mnet on Thursday. We’re also going to Mnet on Thursday. There is a chance, a decent chance, that we can get these CDs autographed for the contest. NOT SURE THOUGH! DON’T GET TOO EXCITED! Things always pop up and get in the way of fun stuff. We might have to go somewhere else, do something else. We’re not sure. Anyhow, if we do wind up getting the CDs signed, we’ll make a video about it to let you know. YEAH! So stay tuned, just in case wonderful things happen.

So, if you want to enter the contest, we’ve got two ways for you to join:

1) For our YouTube subscribers: Make sure you’re subscribed to us on YouTube by clicking THIS. Once you’re sure you’ve subscribed, answer this skill testing question: why would you make an idea candidate to adopt a member of U-Kiss? Most creative answer wins! You can answer either in the comments to the video, or in the comments here! If you do choose to comment here, leave us your YOUTUBE USERNAME so we can make sure you’ve subscribed if we pick you :D

2) For our Twitter followers: Make sure you’re following us on Twitter by clicking THIS. Once you’re sure you’re following us, retweet this blog post. That’s it! You can do so by clicking on the Tweet button right below the video above, or by clicking this link. IT’S THAT EASY! We’ll pick one random winner next week!

Lastly, if you’re not fond of testing your luck with contests and want the album right away, you can pick it up on iTunes, or you can get the physical album mailed to you, international, over at YesAsia. Yeah! Also, as always, we’ve got some bloopers. I added the Bubble Pop to my WANKing and FAPFAPing dance repertoire. It didn’t go over all too well.

AND ONE LAST THING: We’re not going to be answering a lot of emails or comments tomorrow, BECAUSE IT’S MARTINA’S BIRTHDAY! RIGHT NOW!!!! Wish her a happy birthday! YAY!

K Crunch Indie: Rabbit ManMan Time 0

Jambinai - 소멸의 시간 Time Of Extinction

Jambinai – Time of Extinction

Ok, so we’re starting off with a song that’s a bit heavy. It’s actually probably the heaviest song we’ve featured in a K Crunch Indie playlist, I think, or at least it ranks highly up there. We like heavy, sometimes. Not all the time. Sometimes we’re down for light and fluffy with kitties and skipping and sunshine and rainbows, and other times we feel like ass kicking, especially when we’re about to cross the street and some car tries to kill us. From now on, when a car is about to kill me in Korea, I’ll think of this song and use it to funnel my anger. In other words, I’ll think about this song everyday. Side note: I’ve noticed that we often comment about Korea’s sucky driving, and I hope that those few of you Koreans who can’t stand it when non-Koreans criticize your country don’t get too upset at us for this. Yes, I know Korea doesn’t have the worst drivers in the world, but, come on! You gotta admit that it’s scary being a pedestrian sometimes. OBEY THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS ALREADY, KOREA! OBEY THEM!

Mukimukimanmansu – Andromeda

Long time ago, back when we were still in university, we went to this awesome concert where we watched Caribou, Junior Boys, and Four Tet play some songs. They were fantastic. Before they played their sets, though, a band played that we had no idea about. Never heard of them before or since. They came on stage in horse masks. Some of them were dressed up as vampires. They chanted some stuff, and screamed some stuff, over really slow bass and screaming synths. It was really bizarre. By the end of the song, when they walked off stage, one horse-face put his guitar up against the speakers and it resulted in this endless reverb loop that pissed everyone off. Their music totally freaking sucked. I feel like their personalities, though, would get along well with MUKIMUKIMANMANSU! I happen to like MUKIMUKIMANMANSU’s song, though. It’s bizarre, but it’s interesting. The video is freaking terrible, though, and their masks reminded me of Horsefaces from the past.

J Rabbit – 요즘 너 말야

Ok, we couldn’t resist including a cute song. Since we thought this week’s theme was kind of like, Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole, kinda esque, we took a request for J Rabbit. Get it! It kinda fits.

Anyhow, we don’t really know what more we can say about this song and video. It’s cute! The video is kinda cute! The video’s really quite popular, it seems, as it has over 300,000 views, which is roughly 298,000 more than our first two videos in this playlist combined. Was/Is J Rabbit a big deal? OH GOD DON’T KILL US FOR ASKING! Quick: must distract people from scolding us. Hey! Did you check out the site they advertise in their video, friendz.net? It says Merry Christmas in the corner…and it’s almost May! Yay for out of date Christmas decorations. Or…wait: maybe they’re not old decorations, but new ones really, really soon in advance? Possible, I’d say. Some people really love their Christmases. I haven’t heard Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You” for a long time now. Can’t wait to hear it again another 6000 times come Christmas season!

Small side note about the video: see that audio recorder at the bottom of the screen? WE HAVE THAT SAME ONE! WOOHOO! That’s what we use for our videos. It’s a Zoom H4N and it totally rocks. Ok: Nerd Moment over.

We Are Going to Malaysia! 0

ME Malaysia and Simon and Martina

Ok, so this one of the coolest things that has ever happened to us!

We’re going to Malaysia! We were contacted by M.E. Malaysia to do a presentation/meet up/fan chat and stuff! We honestly love the people over at M.E. Malaysia, we actually met them due to B.A.P’s Debut Showcase. They were the only press that was allowed to interview B.A.P and they contacted us to come with them because they liked our blog! We were so flattered and excited, and after the B.A.P showcase, we all hung out went to Hongdae and enjoyed a good dinner with awesome conversation and lots of laughing. So we were really excited to hear from them again to join them in celebrating their anniversary.

The whole event will be at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus on May 12th, and it starts around 1:00pm with videos and backstage footage from M.E Malaysia, as well as some extra events (which are a surprise) and then we’ll be chatting at 3:30pm about our videos, our experiences with the Kpop industry, future projects, the Spudgy’s secret to long luxurious hair, and not zombies, and it’s gonna be awesome! It’ll also be our very first time in Malaysia, so we’re totally excited. Anyone got any advice? Food ideas? We’re nervous! Anyhow, here’s the poster for the event :D

Eat Your Kimchi in Malaysia

YAYYYYYY!!!! If any of you are going to the event, please let us know :D For more info, check out this link about our itinerary and stuff. WE’RE SO SUPER EXCITED! *wiggles*

KpopCharts Update: 1 Power Kiss 0

U Kiss Doradora AJ

1) U-Kiss “DoraDora”Vote for it here!

U-Kiss is finally back in Korea! It seems like they’ve been gone forever, no? They’ve been promoting in Japan, we know, but we don’t cover Japanese songs anymore after Tick Tack. Not that we’re opposed to Japanese music. We’re just trying to draw the line between Kpop and other genres, though the line does get blurry for us. Songs promoted in Japan and sung in Japanese are easily out of the question. But what about songs sung in English? What if it’s by a Korean person but in English? What if it’s not by a Korean person but in Korean? Ah! That’s a bit more difficult for us to pinpoint. Long story short, none of that matters because U-Kiss’ “Doradora” is an actual Kpop song! Huzzah!

And, yes, you heard us correctly in the video. Whoever we review for this week’s Music Monday, we’ll giveaway their album! So vote hard: Fappers and Kissmes! We know it’s pretty close already, and B.A.P. might just overtake U-Kiss.

2) B.A.P. “Power”Vote for it here!

Now here’s where I’m glad we have the KpopCharts. We knew that our ranking system would not necessarily reflect what’s popular on the Korean charts, which is where we got in a bit of trouble when talking about Shinhwa not taking down our servers, but they did fairly well in Korea. It seems like our KpopCharts crowd has its own views and tastes, which is why we made the KpopCharts. Why am I talking about this? Because B.A.P.’s “Power” came out something like 12 hours AFTER Doradora, but it has 150,000 more views than it…yet U-Kiss is winning our poll. Interesting, eh? Well, it’s interesting to us at least.

Also, I’m gonna body slam anyone who complains that we’re not being fair to B.A.P. by featuring them second in our playlist rather than first. The reason why we ordered the videos this way is because, U-Kiss is in first place on our charts. That’s it! If B.A.P. was in first place by the time of our filming, we’d have featured them first instead. So…there!

3) F.Cuz “No. 1″Vote for it here!

Ah. F.Cuz. We didn’t mention this in our video, and we probably won’t get the chance to mention this for Music Monday, because it’s not really faring to well on our charts, but – holy crap – F.Cuz now officially has the worst name in Kpop. F.Cuz was tolerable, but…do you know what it now stands for? For Century Ultimate Zest.. WTF is that garbled nonsense, F.Cuz? You seriously couldn’t think of something better than For Century Ultimate Zest? What is that supposed to mean? You’re not fully clean until you’re zestfully clean, is all I can think about. What is this I don’t even

Gothic Hello Kitty Makeup Tutorial 0

Goth Hello Kitty Eyes

So first, off, I’m sorry that there isn’t a W.A.N.K this week, but MY SISTER WENT INTO SURPRISE LABOUR and had her baby way earlier then what we expected! It’s a healthy baby girl! I’m Aunt Martina now! WAHHH! *excited dance* I’ll be heading back to Canada to visit soon and will bring a suitcase filled with ridiculous Korean stuffed animals and clothing! We just bought our tickets now. We have different plans (surprise plans we should be announcing probably tomorrow!) so we can’t go to Canada until May 18th, but we’ll be there for a month. Yay!

Okay, back to the point of this blog post, which was sorry for no W.A.N.K because I got the call early afternoon and was unable to leave the house and film since I was glued to the phone and iPad. BUT good news, and a totally fluke regarding timing, I was going to post a makeup tutorial on the weekend which I filmed on Tuesday, but now I’ll post it today. What great timing!

I haven’t done a makeup tutorial in a while, I was feeling a little uninspired? Maybe a lack of sleep was causing me zombie on my makeup, but now that the spring weather has appeared I have been infused with life energy again! I love love love cherry blossoms, so I decided to do something with a heavy pinkness since I’ve been admiring all shades of pink in the park lately, but I also wanted something that you could wear out that would be more suited for nighttime, I call it, Goth Hello Kitty! Pink shades and black coming together in perfect union. If you don’t want the seriousness of black, just stick to the pink look and you’re good to go! I think bright pink is such a great way to make any and every eye colour pop right out. It looks both dramatic and fun at the same time. Also, I got two new makeup products both from Makeup Forever, both hot pink…teehee…and I posted them on my Pinterest account which I just started to use and play with, so sorry if it’s kind of empty right now. Anyone else using Pinterest?

Otherwise, we’re about to do a live broadcast on Kondoot really soon, 11:55PM South Korean time, which – by the time this video publishes, should be in 15 minutes! Come chat with us if you’re awake! Also, if you missed our last live Broadcast, Kondoot is sponsoring our IPAD GIVEAWAY CONTEST! All you gotta do for the chance to win a brand, spanking new iPad is do your best Simon and Martina impersonation on Kondoot. Name the broadcast “Can You Kimchi Too” and enter “canyoukimchitoo” in the info box of the video. That’s it. Video with the most loves gets a free iPad. And, considering how there aren’t that many videos up there now, your chances of winning are pretty freaking huge. I’d look into that if I were you :D

K Crunch Cocktail – Chocolate Thumbs Only 0

SNSD Chocolate Love

It’s time for a special good vs bad Korean Commercial edition of K-Crunch Cocktail. MMM, tastes like corporate! Which probably doesn’t taste very good now that I’ve said that. A while ago we did a cell phone advertising edition which had some totally awesome songs and videos to go with it, but this week we’ve got one great song and one not so good song.

1) Girls’ Generation “Chocolate Love”

First up is Girls’ Generation with “Chocolate Love”. This is actually advertising a cell phone that was really long but thin, it kind of looked like a small chocolate bar which I guess is why they called it a chocolate phone. The song itself, I totally totally love. It creates an unlikey marriage between tuba and very digital robotic synths. They even toss in a tiny little acoustic guitar chord that comes in only twice or three times just after the chorus. I just can’t get over that Korean composers can pump out such awesome songs non-stop. The video itself is pretty much just shots of Girls’ Generation dancing around, but I think the outfits are so awesome (but I don’t like the white outfits) and I love the fan dance and the other dance as well. Normally a non-stop video featuring only shots of a band would bore me, but I don’t know why this particular video doesn’t bother me. Maybe there are a lot of outfit changes and I’m easily distracted by—OH LOOK! THAT HAT IS SO SPARKLY! WEEEEEEEeeeeeeEEEE!!! *Martina runs off chasing it*

2) 2PM “Only you, Only coway”

So we talked about the good, but have you seen the bad? The so bad it’s good? Like watching a really terrible movie that’s so endearingly bad you find yourself showing it to all your friends and watching it all the time. That’s what has happened with us and Coway. Now we totally get that Kpop singers have to do advertising to make money, I totally get that, and if a Korean company was like, Simon and Martina, we want you to be in a beer ad where you make super thumbs up and clinck beers together in super slooow motion and act really cheesy we’d be like, “SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!” but I think what went wrong with Coway is that there is a total lack of humour present. Everyone knows that 2PM has been hired to advertise for Coway, so why make the commercials so serious? Cell phones, drinks, and beer can be made into a more natural commercial since kpop idols are doing what they do best, singing and dancing + phone. But Coway is a water filtration system. That’s right, a water freaking filtration freaking system. If that doesn’t scream kpop idol, I don’t know what else does! What’s next? Big Bang advertising Pepto Bismol? How about JYJ advertising Door Stoppers? I didn’t even KNOW what Coway was until I read more about it, which means the actually song they got 2PM to sing wasn’t exactly advertising very well. But then again, here I am researching “what is this coway thing!!??” so perhaps it was unintentionally brilliant marketing. That, or I just wanted to know why 2PM were dancing and singing this bizarre song before every YouTube video I played. I guess writing a love song to my water filtration system just feels really….fake.

And there are even entire “Korean” lessons, brought to you by Coway, where the members of 2PM will teach you a single word. If they had let me and Simon direct that video, it would have been hilarious while still informative. When Taecyeon drinks his strategically placed Coway Filtration Glass Of Water, there isn’t a HINT OF HUMOUR!!!!! BUT YOU KNOW TAECYEON IS LAUGHING IN HIS HEAD AT HOW CHEESY THIS IS! AGHRHHH!! All I wanted to see was a wink and the gun after he drank that glass, or even, “Coway, not just delicious, it helps to keep my sexy body cool after a long day of dancing” and then he dumps the glass of cold water all over his body and shakes the water droplets off in ripito fipito sipi slow motion. That would be both hilarious, obviously jokey (like UV’s cheesy editing in Itaewon Freedom) and it would advertise for them as being a fun company while showing 2PM as having a good sense of humour. Okay, this has gone on for too long. After you watch the worst song ever, check out the Epic Taecyeon and Chansung Lesson and let us know what you would have done differently.

3) CrispiCrunch “Thumbs Up”

Our last song is a request from Rachel from Texas, who is currently living in Virginia, and requested CrispiCrunch’s “Thumbs Up”. I’m so happy for this request because this song is great and the video is hilarious. It’s rare to find bands that are willing to be funny and jokey in a way that makes them look uncool. This duo, along with UV, PSY, sometimes JYP, and perhaps Girl’s Day (at least I hope that they are being jokey), are willingly to do this, and it makes for an awesome music video. Ah yes, two cool looking guys go to a club in Korea and try to pick up girls with their cocky attitude and dance skillz with a zeeeeee or zed…depending on where you are from. The girls are non-impressed and the result is awesome. The ending of the video, also awesome, so make sure you stick around to catch it. I think the reason why we like this video so much is because we often point out how we dislike the “fake” club scene video where everyone is behaving in an orderly fashion and no one is drinking or acting rowdy. I think CrispiCrunch is really showing you what it can be like to be a Korean club. People are not AS crazy as CrispiCrunch, but soju + Korean boys + Korean girls = I’ll let you find out for yourself when you come to Korea.

Custom Made Shoes in Korea 0

Custom Made Shoes in Korea

Ok, so this is a bit random, but that’s what Open the Happy is for! Anyhow, I’m super excited about this because – finally – I CAN GET SHOES IN KOREA! HUZZAAAHHHH!!!

Basically, I went to the Adidas store in Times Square Mall in Seoul. You can’t find any big shoes there readily available, but there’s this funky looking barber shop chair with a touch screen that lets you create your own shoe design. SHAZAM! That’s what I said when I saw it. SHAZAAAAM!!! So I got that etched into my shoe. Ain’t that totally amazing? I picked the colors and patterns of the entire thing, sole to tongue to laces to even the inside material. BAM!

Now, it costs roughly 170,000 won, but – hell – I’m just happy that I don’t have to wait till I go back to Canada once a year in order to stock up on shoes. Now, if the fancy ever hits me, I can get some cool shoes made. Granted, it’s only Adidas, so if I’m feeling for a different style of shoes, something more subtle and less Shazaaaming, I won’t be able to find them. But at least I’m not totally out of shoes, right? So now you know where to get custom made clothes in Korea and custom made shoes, though, I don’t think you’d be wearing both at the same time. Might not match…

Sistar – Alone: Kpop Music Mondays 0

Sistar Alone

Wow! It’s been over a year since we last spoke about Sistar. They’re back with a new rocking song and a not so rocking video:

Like we said in our video, we like the song a lot, but we didn’t like the video. The song was great! We heard it at the club this weekend and really enjoyed dancing to it, though we didn’t do the sexy knee dance. That might have been a traumatic experience for onlookers. We feel, though, like all of the budget went into making the song while the video was soooooo neglected. And they definitely made a thwack of money from the awkward whisky bottle product placement: spend some of that back into the video!

Maybe the video’s geared just for guys who want to see Sistar dance and pose, and who won’t care about Sistar’s surroundings, but – even as a guy watching it – the whole video just seems poorly planned. It’s almost like Super Junior videos when they’re in bizarre rooms, except Super Junior videos have more to them than that, like interesting camera effects (re: the slow motion camera) or cheesy sound effects. Something, at least! This had them in that stupid black room with the red jungle gym. WTF was that? I’d like a black room akin to JYP’s Someone Else, where the lights are doing more work, and make it look awesome. The red thing though…just…I don’t get it.

For that tiny percentage of male readers who watch us (seriously, a vast majority of you are female, according to Google), what are your thoughts on this video? Did it do anything for you? I know the song and video were meant to be sexy, but it just seems like it was attempting just a bit too hard to be sexy. There’s no balance of anything else in the video. Just sexy dancing, then being at an empty bar awkwardly and sexy posing. And rolling around on the floor sexily. It started to get redundant after a while. Maybe you feel differently?

Anyhow, I won’t be watching the video again, but that won’t stop me from liking the song. If you like the song as well, you can pick it up either on iTunes or YesAsia. Otherwise, we’ve got bloopers as usual! Martina has a habit of throwing her pig at me. I have taken self-defence measures, as learned from Street Fighter 2.
